No matter our cultural background, we all have cultural biases. This can be a problem when we work with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
Whether we care for people from multicultural backgrounds in a health or aged care setting, or work with staff from diverse countries, our cultural biases can create misunderstandings, exclusion and conflict. Even if we don’t intend it!
The meaning of cultural biases will be explained in more detail in this module. For now, it’s important to understand that while it’s not possible for any human to completely get rid of all biases, becoming more aware of them can help us not to act on them, become more inclusive, and improve the way we work with people from CALD backgrounds.
